This health plan is widely recognized as one of the best plans in the country  with a choice of four HMOs.  Members can switch plans once per year.  The MPIHP allows members to see any doctor they choose and typically provides 85% of covered charges.  Hospital benefits are provided through Blue Cross.  The HMOs provide most sevices at no charge.  In addition, the plan offers valuable prescription, vision, chiropractic, dental and mental health benefits.

To qualify initially:
You need 600 hours (10 weeks) of covered employment
Weeks do not have to be consecutive but the initial 600 hours must be worked in a 1-year period or less.

For continuing coverage:
You need 300 hours (5 weeks) of covered employment every 6 months

Bank of hours:
When you work more than 300 hours of covered employment in the second 6-month time period, up to a maximum of 450 hours will be stored in a "bank" to be used when needed.  If you do not draw on the "banked" hours they will not expire.

PENSION

The pension portion of this Plan consists of two types of pensions.  The first is a traditional "defined benefit" plan that provides a montly check for life upon retirement. based on the number of years and hyours worked.  The second is an "individual account" plan that creates employer-funded investment accounts for each member, similar to a 401K, which are disbursed after retirement.  In addition, retirees with 15 qualified pension years receive health insurance for themselves and their dependants -- for life.
